Israel’s Moral Civil War in the West

The ease with which what happens anywhere in the world is now documented, in video and in image, and shared across the world in real-time has given the public direct access to the truth like never before. This is how Israel’s two-year-long relentless attack on every human right of the Palestinian people became public knowledge, and this is why public opinion, even in the once detached and uninformed West, is now firmly against Israel. However, Israel’s predicament with public opinion does not end here. The increased awareness of Israel’s crimes in the last two years and the shock it created has led people to reexamine Israel’s decades-long history of crimes against humanity. Most people in the West and across the world now know Israel for what it has always been: a supremacist, settler-colonial, and genocidal state.

Yet, historically, many Western figures in positions of power and influence have been supported by those who promote Israel’s interests. The empowered by and for Israel responded exactly as expected: putting their own interests before the people they are required to represent and ahead of human rights they claim to uphold. They turned against their own voters to defend, protect, and deny the crimes of a foreign state, Israel, that has infiltrated and corrupted their democratic systems. They have been escalating their suppression of the people’s basic right to speak out against genocide, ethnic cleansing, settler colonialism, and extermination by starvation. In addition to abusing their power and the legal system, they have mobilised Israel’s increasingly aggressive, though ever-shrinking, base of uncritical supporters.

The result is an ironic and growing schism between the ruler and the ruled in countries that for decades claimed to be democratic (i.e., ruled by the majority). The political leaderships of Israel-aligned Western democracies have created in their own countries the very schism between ruler and ruled that they once criticised in dictatorships to claim the high moral ground. This, effectively, is a state of moral civil war between the powerful elite and the very people they were elected to represent.

This is what “Democratic” Israel has done to the “Democratic” West.
